I had a meme: Memes are everywhere, but what are they, where do they come from, where are they taking us?

Memes are everywhere. They make us feel stuff #grumpycat. Do stuff #blacklivesmatter. And vote for stuff #fakenews.

But what are they, where do they come from, and where are they taking us? Prof. William Watkin has all the answers, but not necessarily to the questions you wanted to ask. He is a #memeweaver.

  1. I don’t think you fully understand what a meme is. It’s not synonymous with a trend or a movement. Black Lives Matter is definitely NOT a meme, for example, and it would be insulting to the activists involved to describe it as such.
